Challenge

The Urban Connected Communities was a £50m investment into the West Midlands to create an urban 5G region, as part of the UK Government’s £250m 5G ecosystem accelerator programme.

West Midlands 5G was founded to accelerate the 5G deployment and make the region a global centre of excellence. They needed to understand how to optimise the programme structure, engage stakeholders, identify and prioritise use cases and develop the business cases.

Our Role & Impact

Urban Frontiers was brought in by DCMS to support the development of the innovation business cases, and stakeholder engagement across the region including local authorities, LEPs, DCMS and the West Midlands Combined Authority, to identify the core sectors in mobility, infrastructure and applications acceleration, resulting in;

Approval for £15m of HMRC Green Book business cases

Procurement and delivery of the world’s first 5G accelerator programme, 5pring in partnership with Deloitte

World-leading infrastructure acceleration programme for

Launched a £5m innovation ‘Smart, Connected Roads’ competition to source startup/SME solutions with Transport for West Midlands
